The
Book:
Writer/Judge Edwin Torres wrote two books about Carlito Brigante:
"Carlito's Way" and "After Hours". Rise to
Power is based on the first book ("Carlito's Way"),
while the 1993 movie was based on the other one.
Synopsis:
This is the gripping tale of the early years of gangster legend Carlito
Brigante (Jay Hernandez). Seduced by the power of the brutal New York
underworld, he enters a deadly circle of greed and retribution. Carlito.
with his two brothers in crime, Rocco (Michael Kelly) and Earl (Mario
Van Peebles), is on the fast-track to becoming Spanish Harlem's ultimate
kingpin, but quickly learns that the only way to survive at the top
is through loyalty to his friends and respect for the rules of the
street.
It's 1969 and Carlito Brigante, Earl and Rocco are in Elmira state
prison. Earl suggests that once out they no longer are to do petty
jobs for money. They need to go where the money is so begins their
reign as Heroin drug lords.
Carlito brings in his childhood friend Colorado into the game. On
their quest for power and riches the head of the Italian mob Artie
Sr. is told that his son has been kidnapped. He feels that Carlito
is somehow connected to this tragedy and must pay. How will Carlito
clear his name?
